Boredom Cures-Print Division

January 17, 2009

Last night I started reading The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (author-Ron Hansen). I saw the movie a few months ago, and it stuck in my head like few films do. In my mind, it was the best movie of 2007, and I wish I had seen it in the theater. The reason I bring that up is to illustrate that my reading of the book is colored by my view of the movie. As I read, I can’t get the narrator’s voice out of my head. When Jesse James talks, I hear Brad Pitt (he usually only speaks to me in my dreams-ha). And definitely when Robert Ford speaks I hear Casey Affleck. This speaks to the power of the movie, but also makes me wonder how the book would’ve been on its own. Maybe I’ll never know, or maybe the book’s voice will take over the farther into it I get.

Comic Books

I read a number of comics every month, and like anything else they vary in quality. Lately, the best have been:

Incognito-The first issue just came out, and writer Ed Brubaker does what he does best. Write morally questionable characters who you can’t help but root for.

Green Lantern-The mythology of this series keeps growing, and I’m liking the direction.

Fables-Just when everything seemed to going the Fables’ way, it all is falling apart around them. Literally in some cases.

The Write Niche

For me, finding a niche has been like trying to choose a favorite among my own children. There are so many things I love to do, but one I'm passionate about and that's writing.
