Rapid Reviews – Straw Dogs

May 16, 2009

My first experience with Peckinpah, this film gets 3.5 stars. It’s a movie about how far a man can be pushed before he turns to violence. What I found interesting was that throughout the film Dustin Hoffman’s character turns the other cheek to all affronts against him, and is a coward in the way many of us are cowards when we would rather avoid confrontation, and when he finally snaps, it is in the midst of something that is not initially directed at him, and the major plot point that should’ve pushed him to this rage is something he is never made explicitly aware of.  It is more than fun to see him make this transition, and it feels real, much more so than if Pekinpah had taken the route of a revenge tale.  Dustin Hoffman defending his home against intruders I can buy.  Dustin Hoffman hunting down men to extract vengeance, not so much.
