Violence is a Choice

May 30, 2013

I’ve been thinking a lot about our culture’s definition of masculinity lately and how that definition affects the way men treat women and each other.  In short, I think that much of the way our society views gender is narrow-minded and ends up being a self-fulfilling prophecy, often with negative effects.  But I hope to write more on that subject later.  For now, I’d just like to post the below video of Patrick Stewart answering a question about his work against domestic violence.  I didn’t know this before, but he grew up with a father who beat his mother, and so is able to view this horrible plague with a very specific set of eyes.  His answer touches both on the devastation that domestic violence wreaks on women and on the way men are socialized to permit it.  He also makes the great (and what should be obvious) point that this violence is a choice, a choice that we should never make.  I’d like to add that as men it is our responsibility to not make light of it, to speak out against it, and to intervene to stop it.

Please take a few minutes out of your day and watch this, and at least a few more to think about it.

Such a powerful speech, and a compassionate man. Thank you for being such a wonderful man.
