Blanco the Whale (or Whale Spout Smells Really Bad)

June 4, 2013

For more reasons than I can count, this past weekend was one of the most fun I’ve had in ages.  Below are a couple videos from the whale-watching tour we took on Saturday.  We left Depoe Bay, OR in a hard-bottomed Zodiac almost exactly like the picture. We were out in the ocean for about ten minutes before seeing our first spout and then for the next 45 minutes, our guide followed this one particular whale (named Blanco for his white tail) who has come  to this same spot for the past few years.  It was rad, awesome, totally cool. The video will do it more justice than my words ever could.

At the end of the tour, our guide took us out to this buoy about a mile off shore.  When we got there, a wounded sea lion was sunning itself on the buoy, and two or three adults (hard to say for sure) were playing in the water around it.  There was also a baby, but unfortunately, I didn’t get video or a photograph of her.  Suffice it to say, she was very cute.  (Please ignore my finger at the end of the video.  I was distracted by the damn sea lions.)
